Surrey Easter Congress, 21-24 April

The Surrey County Chess Association's Easter Congress was held at Carshalton High School for Girls on 21-24 April and run by the Coulsdon Chess Fellowship. Commentary from Scott Freeman of Coulsdon.

"FRANK WINTER" MEMORIAL OPEN TOURNAMENT (FIDE Rated, 7-Round Swiss, 60 Competitors): 1st Andrew Webster (South Norwood) 6/7 (£400), 2nd= Jon Benjamin (Richmond), Graeme Buckley (Bushbury), Peter Kemp (Streatham) 5½ (£117 each)

For the second year running, International Master Andrew Webster walked away with first prize; this time having scored 6 points as opposed to the 6½ points he scored last year. He relinquished the SCCU title that he won last year, though, as this was contested at the Southend Congress. Unlike last year when Grandmasters were not to be seen, there was one this year. Colin McNab (Scotland) failed to take advantage of this and didn't find his way into the prize money. Nor did top seed Danny Gormally (Coulsdon), who along with McNab, scored only 4½. There were two other International Masters on duty; one being Graeme Buckley (Bushbury), who with 5½ points shared second place with Jon Benjamin (Richmond) and Peter Kemp (Streatham). Yochanan Afek (Israel) was another to finish with 4½. Philip Bonafont of Gerrards Cross caught everyone's eye. He had arrived at the event expecting to play in the Premier, only to find that his new "corrected" grade was 170. Seemingly reluctantly, he agreed to play in the Open. After 7 rounds, he had only beaten McNab and drawn with Buckley and Webster. He remained unbeaten until the final round when a loss to Kemp denied him the prize money that his performance deserved.

PREMIER TOURNAMENT (U170, 41 Competitors): 1st Andrew Horton-Kitchlew (ISH) 6/7 (£240), 2nd Craig Young (St Albans) 5½, 3rd= Andrew Fleming (Eastbourne), Dominic Gibbs (Flying Teapots), Martin Page (Insurance), Ido Porat (Israel) 5 (£30 each).

On the other side of the coin to Philip Bonafont in the Open, Andy Kitchlew arrived half-expecting to play in the top section. Having discovered his "corrected grade" was 169, he proceeded to take out the Premier Section, scoring 6 points. A last round draw against Craig Young kept him in front, but gave Craig second place. It was a good week for Craig as he went on to beat Danny Gormally in the simultaneous event held at Coulsdon a couple of days later.

MAJOR TOURNAMENT (U145, 50 Competitors): 1st= George Coomber (Coulsdon & Purley), Russell Goodfellow (Tunbridge Wells) 6 (£180 each), 3rd Stuart Hamilton (Coulsdon & Purley) 5½ (£80), 4th= Lucy Broomfield (South Norwood), C-J De Mooi (Brighton), Norman Harris (Charlton), Adrian Waldock (Guildford / Richmond) 5 (£10).

In the Major, George Coomber (Coulsdon) put his concerns of a dropping grade behind him to share first prize with Russell Goodfellow. Both players scored 6 out of 7. Another super performance saw Stuart Hamilton (Coulsdon) finish third with 5½. Stuart is a fast developing player whose grade of 89 could have seen him clear up £200 had he played in the Novice A and B. Credit to him for jumping two events up. He still won a prize and gained some valuable experience as well. The hard task of what to do with a tenner went to the four players who shared fourth place: Lucy Broomfield (South Norwood), C-J De Mooi (Brighton), Adrian Waldock (Guildford & Richmond) and Norman Harris (Charlton).

MINOR "A" (U120, 45 Competitors): 1st= Sarah Hegarty (Woking), Edward Leung (Richmond Juniors) 4½/5 (£90 each), 3rd= Tristan Clayton, Keith Findley (South Norwood) 4 (£30 each).

MINOR "B" (U120, 42 Competitors): 1st Paul Seet 5/5 (£120). 2nd Edward Leung (Richmond Juniors) 4½ (£60), 3rd Joseph Farrell (Metropolitan) 4 (£40), 4th= Victor Bluett (Wallington), James Chapman (Danson), Robert Davidson (Brighton), Anthony Duncan (Islington), David Howes (Coulsdon & Purley), Daniel Lappage (Magdalen College School), David Wheatley 3½ (£3).

NOVICE "A" (U90, 24 Competitors): 1st Ashley Hegarty (Woking) 5 (£100), 2nd= Fergus Brown (Surbiton), Joseph Farrell Metropolitan 4 (£38)

NOVICE "B" (U90, 17 Competitors): 1st Brian Williamson (Coulsdon & Purley) 4½ (£100), 2nd= Yasmin Ball (Maidenhead), Fred Coombes (Metropolitan), Alan Fraser (Beckenham & Bromley) 3½ (£25)

BLITZ EVENT (52 Competitors): 1st Danny Gormally (Coulsdon & Purley) 6½ (£50), u200 Shi Porat (Israel) 5½ (£25), u170 Ido Porat (Israel), Ross Rattray (Richmond Juniors), Thomas Rendle (Hastings) 5 (£9), u140 Jonathan Somekh (Richmond Juniors) 4½ (£25), u110 Nicholas Lai Baranga (Barnet Knights) 4 (£25), u80 Daniel Gliddon (Coulsdon & Purley) 3 (£25).

SPECIAL CONGRESS PRIZES: There were not many this year owing to the lower turnout, but we were able to offer the following: LADIES' PRIZE - Sarah Hegarty (Minor A, 4½, £25); FAMILY PRIZE - Hegarty (Ashley, Daniel & Sarah) £25

OTHER CONGRESS PRIZES: The Hawson Trophy was won by Fred Coombes of Wimbledon, who scored 3½ out of 5 in the Novice B event. This splendid trophy was given to the Surrey County Chess Association by the family of John Hawson, a stalwart both of the Congress and of the County, who sadly passed away just two days before last year's event.

SMITH & WILLIAMSON BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFIERS: At the time of writing this report, we are awaiting details from the BCF Director of Congress Chess as to the players already qualified for the Smith & Williamson British Championships. Consequently, we cannot yet determine who has qualified from the Surrey Easter Congress. We shall notify those who have qualified in due course and the information will be on our web site.

Bolton Easter Congress, 21-23 April 2000

Harry Lamb reports: Bolton's Easter congress is one of the countries' longest running events, first held in 1946: it is now in its 55th year. Another longevity record is that of Harry Lamb who has played in it or helped to organise it every year since 1953, an amazing total of 47 continuous years. This year the Open was won jointly by local favourite Jeff Horner and David Hulmes from Stockport. Jeff too has a long record with the event. He first played in it about 38 years ago and has won it many times in the intervening period. But times do change even at Bolton. David is a comparative youngster and it is the first time he has won the event.

The first indication of changing times was in round three when David beat Jeff in an exciting game that involved David winning a Queen for a Rook and a Bishop. Jeff kept up the pressure though by winning his last three games while David could only manage a win and two draws, which meant that they both finished on five out of six.

Durham Congress, 7-9 April 2000

Report by Lara Barnes: Durham County Congress Open was won jointly by Colin Crouch of Harrow, Alan Grant of Glasgow and Roger Coathup of Tynemouth.

The last round decided everything as Dusan Zdjelar (YUG, 2194) was looking as though he might win outright after Colin Crouch lost to Roger Coathup; but Alan Grant outplayed him and shared the spoils.

The Major (U150) was won jointly by J Panayotidis (Wallsend, Newcastle & Tynemouth), P Widrascu, J Hawkins and David Eggleston of Durham (graded only 88), all with 4/5. David Eggleston's twin brother Thomas (94BCF) couldn't play on the Saturday, but filled in on the Sunday in the Open; he beat a player graded 156BCF.

Bernie Price won the Minor with 4½. D Brent of Urmston was 2nd with 4 points and a host of people tied for third.

33rd Norfolk Congress, 8-9 April 2000

John Robinson reports: The 33rd Norfolk Congress took place on 8-9 April, attracting a field of 84. The Congress ran with three tournaments of (approx.) equal numbers, grouped according to grade. In the "Premier" the winner, and Smith & Williamson British Championship qualifier, was Steve Orton, of Norwich with 4½/5. He and Tim Hebbes went into the final round as joint leaders on 3½/4. In that round, Tim narrowly avoided a loss on time at the expense of a loss of material. Appended is Tim Hebbe's game from the fourth round, notable not least for its time handling. I became aware that something special was happening when Tim took a whole hour over his first 5 moves! Tim was one of the runners-up on 3½; the others were Desmond Tan, David G Smith, Nigel Beveridge, Shaun Munson, Alec Toll and Nigel Blades.

29th Richmond Rapidplay, 9 April 2000

Report by Richard James

The 29th Richmond Rapidplay, organised by Richmond Junior Chess Club, was held at the White House Community Association, Hampton on Sunday 9 April. Once again it was the younger participants who made the headlines.

Richmond's young 4NCL stars Richard Bates and Simon Williams took first and second place in the Open, with Richard's Round 3 win proving decisive. The third IM, Graeme Buckley, lost two games, to Richard Bates and to 12-year-old Jonathan Lappage, of Oxfordshire.

The Major fell to Donny Muter, while there were successes for young players in both the Intermediate and Minor sections, 9-year-old Sussex star Sebastian Pozzo won the Intermediate section with 5½/6 and Alex O'Toole, aged 8, from Essex, triumphed in the Minor section with the same score. In a great day for the O'Toole family, Alex's younger brother George, aged only 6, scored 4/6 in the Minor, sharing 4th place, while big brother Antony, 11, shared 3rd place in the Intermediate section.

Round 6

There were very few draws at the top, as everyone played with total commitment. David Howell completed a very good Easter Day by beating Roy Phillips (191) with Black, in 50 moves, his best games of the tournament, bringing him up through the field. The early leader, Jack Rudd, was shattered to lose for the first time, to his rival, Simon Buckley, who thus joined him on 4½/6. Scottish Glorney Cup player, James Parkin, joined the leaders after a win over former WECU Champion, Gerald Moore of Imperial College. After dropping points early on, 1999 British Championship qualifier, Martin Simons, joined the chasing pack by beating local player, Alan Brusey. The current Champion, and former British Under-18 Champion, Neil Crickmore, got blown off course by David Shire.

Rudd, J (4½) 0 - 1 Buckley, S (3 ½)
Parkin, J (4) 1 - 0 Moore, G (3½)
Simons, M (3) 1 - 0 Brusey, A (3)
Humphreys, J (3) ½ - ½ Buckley, Melanie (3)
Phillips, R 0 - 1 Howell, D 1 (3)
Shire, D (3) 1 - 0 Crickmore, N (3)

Round 7

With 3 young tigers now on 4½, Simon Buckley and James Parkin were drawn to play each other, while Rudd floated down to meet the more senior player and problemist, David Shire. The former pair had to balance caution and courage, and neither could overcome the other, although Parkin did enter a Rook and pawn endgame with an extra pawn, but couldn't make it count. Rudd meanwhile imposed himself as White and never looked like being headed. He thus won the WECU Championship and the British Championship qualifying place. This latter is appropriate, as Rudd is a Somerset player and Millfield School is on his doorstep. David Howell played Martin Simons, both keen to get something out of the competition, after indifferent starts, by their standards. Simons narrowed White's options by playing the Scandinavian. He used 35 minutes on moves 12 & 13, and only another 35 minutes for the other 20 moves, recording his 2nd consecutive win, and joining Parkin and Buckley in joint 2nd place. David Howell had the consolation of sharing the grading prize with David Shire, and of having shown West Country players glimpses of what he is capable of. And let's not forget, 4 points out of 6 rounds by a 9 yr old in this company, would be sensational, had not the media hype preceded him. However, it was all good experience for him, at about the right level.

Buckley, S (4½) ½ - ½ Parkin, J (4½)
Rudd, J (4½) 1 - 0 Shire, D (4)
Howell, D (4) 0 - 1 Simons, M (4)

Open: 1st Jack Rudd (Yeovil) 5½/7 (WECU Champion & British Qualifier), 2nd= Simon Buckley (Bath), James Parkin (Exeter University), Martin Simons (Bournemouth) 5
Grading Prize: David Howell (Seaford), David Shire (Canterbury) 4
