The Smith & Williamson British Chess Championships (the 87th Annual Championships of the BCF) were held from Sunday 30th July to Saturday 12th August 2000 at Millfield School, Somerset.
Julian Hodgson made sure of retaining the British Championship (and winning it for the fourth time in all) by drawing with Mark Hebden in the last round. Many congratulations to him! Humpy Koneru, aged 13 years and 4 months, won the British Ladies' Championship with 6½/11 ahead of Harriet Hunt, 6; incidentally, this beats, by a matter of months, Elaine Pritchard's record for the youngest player to win the British Ladies' Championship which had stood since 1939. The Under-21 title was shared by Nick Pert and Brian Kelly (both 7/11 in the Championship) and the Under-18 title went to Bret Addison (2nd equal with 8/11 in the Major Open). The Girls Under-18 title went to Elaine Rutherford, who scored 6½ in the Major Open. The Major Open was won by Richard Pert (8½/11).

Stewart Reuben reports: A match was held between IM Nicholas Pert and GM Murray Chandler, sponsored by The Terence Chapman Group, and played at Stewart Reuben's home in Twickenham, London. This six-game match took place daily, with £1000 for the winner and £500 for the loser. In the end the match was drawn 3-3 and the players took £750 each.
| Terence Chapman Challenge | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | Total | ||
| Nicholas Pert | IM | 2455 | ½ | 0 | 1 | 0 | 1 | ½ | 3 |
| Murray Chandler | GM | 2526 | ½ | 1 | 0 | 1 | 0 | ½ | 3 |
Game 1 was a 4 Qc2 Nimzo-Indian. Black achieved a plus from the opening but White played well to achieve a position where it was unlikely Black could make progress.
Game 2: Murray Chandler won very clearly with the White pieces. Black should not have been so eager to play 13...cxd4. This simplified matters for White. 15...Rxc2 or earlier meant it was possible for White to surround, and ultimately win, the rook.
Game 3: A rambunctious, stirring game. Black had to stop 21 f5, possibly with ...Kh8. After that it was difficult to avoid getting a passive position. A fine effort by the young Terence Chapman gold awardee.
Game 4: White gained an advantage in the opening and converted this into a pawn plus. Black was unable to hold the position despite there being bishops of opposite colours. Thus Murray Chandler took the lead again against the young Nicholas Pert.
Game 5: Nicholas Pert had his last White of the match. They played the same line in the Queen's Indian as before, but it was the youngster who varied first with 10 e5. 14...Bc5 was a blunder losing a piece. After that Nicholas just had to grind out a win. But Murray Chandler already had a bad game.
The last game of the match was a French Defence in which the chances were evenly balanced on both sides. Thus the first Terence Chapman Challenge match ended in a tie 3-3. The event was very successful. All four wins were interesting and the two draws were both hard-fought. Nicholas showed his mettle in coming back from behind twice in the match to level it. Opportunities to play matches are rare. They are a severe test of a player's skill. It is very easy to be overwhelmed. One would have expected that Murray's greater experience (he has played a couple of matches) and over 20 years of international play would tell. But the youngster proved his equal. Murray reminisced wryly on the fact he had beaten Kasparov before Nicholas was born.

Richard James reports: The 31st Richmond Rapidplay, organised by Richmond Junior Chess Club, was held at the White House Community Association, Hampton on Sunday 10 September. The total entry of 118 players was the highest for some time.
The Open once again attracted a quality field. England's highest rated woman, Harriet Hunt, took part for the first time, along with European Women's Under 20 Champion Jovanka Houska. Leading the opposition were IMs Graeme Buckley, Peter Large, James Sherwin (USA) and Simon Williams, the highly rated Gavin Wall, combining playing with his duties as part of the organising team, and FM Andrew Lewis. Junior stars Desmond Tan, Costas Harris, David Edwards and David Howell were expected to make a bold showing.
But in the end the results looked suspiciously like those of the previous tournament, with Simon Williams just edging out Peter Large. Once again Laurence Webb came through to share 3rd place, where he was unexpectedly joined by 165-rated Colin Purdon of Hounslow Chess Club. Colin's outstanding result included wins against Jovanka Houska, Andrew Lewis and Harriet Hunt, followed by a last round draw against Simon Williams.
The Major went to Peter Walters, of Hayes, Middx chess club, just ahead of Richmond Junior stars Thomas Nixon and Jonathan Somekh. Mario Houska, Jovanka's father, impressed with 5½/6 in the Intermediate, ahead of a host of talented juniors. But the star of the whole show was 7-year-old George O'Toole, the youngest of three chess-playing brothers from Southend, who shared first place in the Minor with Metropolitan Chess Club veteran Antonio Gonzalez.
