There was a four-way tie for 1st place. Some news of the English junior competitors: Terence Chapman gold award holder and IM Nick Pert, 19, who is from Ipswich and reads maths and statistics at Warwick University, thus shared first place with Barsov, Hebden and Kiriakov and scored his third and final GM norm. He now requires a 2500+ rating to receive the title. Other junior successes: Craig Hanley, 16, from RGS Lancaster school, achieved his first IM norm with 6/9. Ameet Ghasi, 13, from King Edward's School, Edgbaston, scored a 6/9 2400+ result in his first international tournament. Jonathan Lappage, 13, from Magdalen College School, Oxford, scored 5½/9, drawing with two IMs, for a 2360 result. One notable performance by a non-junior: Mike Waddington, 34, from Wimborne, unrated but with a BCF grade of 174 (equivalent to 1992) scored a remarkable 6/9 for a rating performance of 2353. He scored 2/3 versus the Ledger brothers and beat IMs Marusenko and Ganbold. Note: Kiriakov was first, and Hebden second, on the official tie-break (not reflected in the table below).

The 25th Kidlington Congress took place on 3-4 February 2001. There was a five-way share for 1st place in the Major tournament. Ray Starkie of Cowley won the Intermediate and Simon Richards of Wantage won the Minor. I am grateful to Lester Millin and the Oxfordshire Chess Association web site for results and games.

The 6th South Wales Masters, a category 1 event with an average rating of 2271, was held at the Newport Leisure Centre, 8-12 January 2001, and organised by FM Chris Dunworth. Two English teenagers, FM Richard Palliser (19) and James Bourne (18), finished in a tie for first place with IM Marusenko after Palliser had lost to Bourne in the last round whilst going all out for a second IM norm of 7/9 (his first being just before Christmas in the Viking IM tournament at York). Thanks to Jon Gilbert for supplying the games.

Report by Harry Lamb: Greater Manchester held its annual winter congress at The Mill at the Pier, Wigan: an interesting venue, being a former cotton mill forming part of the Wigan Pier tourist attraction and made famous by George Orwell in his book The Road to Wigan Pier. The pier itself is the jetty on the canal outside the mill where barges used to load and unload. Grandmaster Keith Arkell followed the road to Wigan pier this year and was rewarded with a fine start to the 2001 Terence Chapman Grand Prix. He won the Premier with a perfect score of five points from five games.
The challengers event was won by Marc Clancy of Stockport with 4.5 out of 5. Malcolm Plant from Rochdale won the Knights, also with 4.5: a good result by Malcolm who is the father of the promising 12 year old local junior player Paul. Malcolm has only been playing since his son became interested in chess. He plays to pass the time while watching his son and also to encourage him. One sometime detects a little bit of rivalry between them and I am sure that this result will encourage and enliven Paul. Paul, incidentally, played in the Premier and scored two points.
The event was well named the winter congress. On the Saturday night eight inches of snow were forecast overnight and sure enough there was a snowstorm in the early hours of the morning. It was however not as bad as predicted with about four inches falling, (10cms to readers employed by the Sunderland trading standards office). The controllers got up early on Sunday morning braving the elements, and fought their way to the venue expecting a massive number of defaults. Much to their surprise there was only one default and nearly all the competitors were there before the start. Usually for the Sunday morning session you get the players coming in late in dribs and drabs, preferring to take a time penalty on their clock rather than jump out of bed. But when the going gets tough, the easy life gets left behind.
98 players took part in the 33rd Richmond Rapidplay held, as usual, at the White House Community Association, Hampton, and controlled by Adam Raoof, on Sunday 21 January.
We were pleased to welcome British Champion GM Julian Hodgson (minus his chair) for his first Richmond Rapidplay, along with 3/4ths of the England Women's Olympic team and the usual IM suspects: Peter Large, James Sherwin and Simon Williams. Julian duly recorded a 100% score, with Harriet Hunt and Simon Williams sharing second place on 4½/6. Michael Kobylka, a frequent tournament winner at this level, took first place in the Major with a score of 5/6. The Intermediate resulted in a local success when Richmond Junior Club member Kasim Khorasanee shared first place with Maltese International Joe Xuereb. We were delighted that Harvey Murray-Smith, a long-term supporter of the Richmond Chess Initiative, came out on top of a closely fought Minor section with 5 points out of 6.

Scott Freeman reports: Bearing in mind we were holding a blitz, which is a narrower market than rapidplay, and there were two London Rapidplays taking place, we were delighted to get 30 for this event. Thank you to those who made it. The atmosphere was great and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, including the arbiter (me), who had great fun trying to pair the last 3 or 4 rounds, ably assisted by David Sedgwick.
