The 12th Nottinghamshire Rapidplay was held at Siemens plc, Beeston, Nottingham, on 4 March 2001.
Another record-breaking entry for this year's event with 181 competitors, a 16% increase on last year's total and some latecomers having to be disappointed due to lack of space.
In the OPEN section (22 competitors) the two competing IMs were surprisingly outscored by some of their less fancied rivals, and following a draw between them in round 5, first place was shared by FM Adam Collinson (Gambit) and Antonis Hadzimanolis (Loughborough) who both scored 5/6. Third place was shared by IM Lawrence Cooper (Stafford) and Martin Burrows (Wigston) with 4½/6.
The MAJOR section, for players graded below 155 (63 competitors) was for the most part dominated by Richard Desmedt of EBFC, who survived a difficult last round encounter to take first place with 5½/6. Three players shared second place - Simon Wells (Mansfield), Lloyd Beckford (Harambee) and Dean Hartley (Amber Valley), who all scored 5/6, the first two also winning the grading prizes in this section.
The STEVE HOUSEGO MEMORIAL section, for players graded below 110 (96 competitors) was a close contest throughout, with no one player dominating proceedings. In the end, three players shared first prize - Prasun Chakravorty (Shefield Nomads), Abdel Azzam (Nottingham University) and Richard Davies (Derby), all scoring 5½/6. They will share the Steve Housego Memorial trophy once it has been engraved. Local players were successful in winning grading prizes, and six book prizes were presented to the most successful juniors who did not win cash prizes.
Despite some computer problems between rounds one and two, the tournament soon got back on schedule and finished at the advertised time, for which thanks are due to the entire controlling team and to the caterers. It is hoped that the event will take place on the equivalent date next year at the same excellent venue, when consideration will be given to running a fourth section due to the ever-increasing number of entries.
