The 11th Civil Service Championship was held in Leeds, 25-27 July 2001. Andy Ledger warmed up for the British with 5/5, only the second time there's been a 100% score. Ihor Lewyk was second on Sum of Progressive scores, Alan Brusey and Kevin Thurlow were level on SOPS, but Thurlow was just ahead on Sum of Opponents Scores.

Coulsdon Congress, 1-2 September & Blitz, 27 August

Running alongside the Coulsdon Congress this weekend was the hysteria of the Germany v England World Cup Qualifier with the Round 3 players woken from their slumber of playing no less than five times by distant drunken sounding roars from the group of those watching in the analysis area. The atmosphere in and out of the hall was great all weekend - the football just capped it superbly. The congress probably lost one or two entries because of the football; the Under 90 section ended up with just 7 players and by the end of round 3, they had all had a bye! Good fun for the arbiting team. Nonetheless it was a good weekend with some really tight matches. The prizes won were as follows:

Barbican Chess Club Merges with Cavendish Chess Club

Jane Seymour reports: Please note that Barbican chess club no longer exists as a separate London club. From the end of August we will be merging with Cavendish and playing under that name in London League etc. Any enquiries should go to their secretary Barry Green, 11 Edgbaston Drive, Shenley, Radlett, Herts WD7 9HT, tel 01923 852744.
