J.Rogers-Byway 4NCL Barbican II v Poisoned Pawns
Notes by GM John Emms
White: Jonathan Rogers (Barbican II)
Black: Paul Byway (Poisoned Pawns) Torre D03 1 d4 Nf6 2 Nf3 d5 3
Bg5 e6 4 e3 Nbd7 5 Bd3 c5 6 c3 Be7 7 Nbd2 Qc7 8 Qe2 b6 8...0-0 is
safer. 9 Ne5!? Bb7?! Good, bad, or indifferent, I think Black
should grab the pawn here with 9...Nxe5 10 dxe5 Qxe5, as the complications
arising after 11 Bf4 Qh5 12 Bb5+ Kf8 (or 12
Bd7!?) 13 g4 Qxg4 14 Qxg4 Nxg4
15 Bc6 e5 are by no means bad for Black. 10 Bb5! Bc8 11 e4!?
Unsurprisingly, given the loss of time on Black's part, White tries to
open things up. A risk free plus could have been achieved after the automatic
11 f4. 11...a6 12 Bc6 Bb7 13 exd5 13 Bxf6? Bxc6 14 Bxg7 Rg8 is
fine for Black. 13...Bxc6 14 Nxc6 Nxd5 15 Nxe7 Nxe7 16 0-0 Qc6
Black must prepare to castle with either 16...Ng6 or 16...cxd4 17 cxd4
Nd5. 17 Ne4 Nc8? 18 d5! Qxd5 19 Rad1 Qb7 20 Qf3 Ra7 21 Rxd7! Qxd7 22 Rd1
Qc7 23 Nf6+! gxf6 Or 23...Kf8 24 Nh5 Ne7 25 Nxg7 Kxg7 26 Qf6+ Kg8 27
Bh6 and White wins. 24 Qxf6 Nd6 25 Qxh8+ Kd7 26 Bf4 1-0
