Harley-Williams Poisoned Pawns vs. Midland Monarchs
Notes by GM John Emms
1 e4 c5 2 c3 e6 3 d4 d5 4 exd5 exd5 5 Nf3
Bg4!? 6 Bb5+ Nc6 7 Qe2+ 7 0-0!? cxd4?! (7...Nf6) 8 Qa4! looks
interesting, as 8...Bxf3 runs into 9 Bxc6+ bxc6 10 Qxc6+ Ke7 11 gxf3 and White
has a strong attack. 7...Be7 8 dxc5 Nf6 9 Be3 0-0 White is a
pawn up, but Black has some compensation the c5-pawn is weak and Black
can prepare ...Re8 and ...Bxc5. 10 h3 Bh5 11 g4 Committal, but
White has no easy way to keep the advantage. 11 0-0 Re8 12 b4 Ne4 13 g4 Bg6 14
Nd4 Qc7 is unclear. 11...Bg6 12 0-0 Ne4 13 Bxc6 13 Rd1!?.
13 ..bxc6 14 Ne5 Bxc5! 15 Nxc6 Qd6 16 Bxc5 Nxc5 17 Ne7+ Kh8 18 Nxg6+
fxg6 The smoke has cleared, White is still a pawn up, but that's then
end of the good news. Black is very active and White's king has lots of open
space around it. 19 Nd2 Rae8 20 Qd1 Nd3! 21 Nb3 After 21 Qc2
Black wins with 21 ..Nxf2! 22 Rxf2 Rxf2 23 Kxf2 Qh2+ 24 Kf3 Qe2+ 25 Kg3 Re3+ 26
Kf4 Qf2+ 27 Kg5 Qf6 mate. 21 ..Re3! 0-1 A nice finish. If White
doesn't capture on e3 then the h3-pawn drops and White's position collapses. 21
..Re3! 22 fxe3 (22 Qd2 Rxh3 23 f3 Qg3+ 24 Qg2 Qh4 wins) 22 ..Qg3+ 23 Kh1 Rf2
and it's mate next move. |
